Mountain gorilla trekking expereince is Uganda’s premier adventure where the visitors come up-close and personal to the mountain gorilla family as it forages across their natural rainforest homes.

This bucket-list expereince is offered in two distinct and unique experiences namely; ordinary/Normal and habituation trekking experience. Uganda protects half of the global population of the endangered mountain gorillas across its pristine rainforests of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest NP and Mgahinga Gorilla NP where some 23 gorillas families are habituated for daily trekking experiences.

What is Mountain Gorilla Habituation Tracking Experience

A mountain gorilla habituation experience is where a small group of tourists (4 maximum) are allowed to trek with researchers to gorilla families undergoing a habituation process. The habituation process of mountain gorillas begins when a group of researchers and trackers locate a wild gorilla family, follow it daily as it forages until it gets used and accepts human presence, and doesn’t feel threatened at all.

Although mountain gorillas are gentle and peaceful, habituation of these giants apes is a long and slow process often lasting over 24 months of daily contact. During this process, the research rangers study the gorilla family home range, establish family hierarchy within members, and general health. It’s on this interesting behind-the-scenes experience that a minimum number of visitors is invited.

Gorilla habituation expereince in Uganda is only offered in selected sector offices of Bwindi impenetrable Forest National Park.

Mountain gorilla habituation trek experience day starts at at 6 am with a check-in at the trail head office, where after you join a small team of research rangers to trek deep in the forests. The trek leads on into the mountain gorilla family home where the first mission is to locate where the family nested for a night, then following it as it forages.

It’s important to note that the mountain gorilla family visited on habituation expereince occur in far-reaching territories away from established forest trails. They are raw and natural  – not fully used to human presence, extremely shy, protective and reactional with unpredictable behavior. Therefore during these treks, one is required to follow closely the ranger’s guidelines for safety.

  • Level of difficulty

The trek on habituation experience, is considered tougher, longer, and unpredictable in itself. It’s recommended that one is in reasonable fitness levels and on a trek  day, carry pretty of drinking water, packed lunch, and rain jacket. Helpers are available for hire from the briefing point to carry that backpack and also give a hand on the trek.

What is the Ordinary/Normal Mountain Gorilla Tracking Experience

On the hand, an ordinary mountain gorilla trek expereince is far easy activity, where visitors are guided on a trek to a fully habituated family (used to human presence) whose territories are well established. A mountain gorilla family visited on this expereince demonstrates a relaxed “reception”, often going about its business unbothered by human presence thus offering an excellent up-close viewing experience and photographic opportunities.

Mountain gorillas occur in small family units numbering between 5 to 15 individuals with a dominant silverback at helm. The silverback is the protector and family head, while female and male blackbucks, characterful youngsters make up the rest of the group.

On locating the mountain gorillas during the trek, visitors get to spend a strictly enforced One hour duration to observing and photographing gorillas.

Ordinary mountain gorilla trekking expereince is offered from all sector offices of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest NP and Mgahinga Gorilla NP.
