The 2 Days Akagera National Park Wildlife Safari offers a classic Africa wilderness expereince bringing you up-close to the iconic Big 5 on game drives across breath-taking landscapes of Akagera NP.

Akagera National Park is located in the eastern region of Rwanda, the country’s only savanna park and a true African wilderness gem, stocked with a diversity of game and excellent birdlife. The park’s plethora of habitats include vast savanna grasslands plains, wooded mountain ridges and extensive wetlands poked by fresh water lakes fed by Kagera river.

The tour is led by our own wildlife guide, who will take you on well-paced game viewing drives that will bring you up-close to a variety of game. Top highlights here include; Lions, Black and Southern White Rhinos, Cape buffalo, Elephant, Common Eland, Zebra, Giraffes, Impala, Bushbuck and with luck; Leopard and Hyena among others.

The tour winds up with an afternoon boat cruise safari on Lake Ihema, the largest of the lakes in the park, to come into close quarters aquatic wildlife including Common Hippo, Nile Crocodile and an impressive birdlife.

Detailed Itinerary for 2 Days Akagera Wildlife Safari

Day One: Transfer to Akagera National Park, and have an evening Boat Cruise

Early this morning,  your driver guide will pick you from your hotel/residence in Kigali to transfer you to Akagera National Park. The two- and half-hour drive from Kigali City is smooth with short scenic and stretch stops. Checking in at the park you will head out for a hot lunch at your lodge. This accommodation is perfectly considered for its excellent location on the shores of L. Ihema and its wilderness feel.

  • Boat Safari on Lake Ihema

Late afternoon you will embark on a boat cruise for chances to encounter up-close the semi-aquatic hippo pods resident on these waters but also the Nile Crocodile, Nile monitor and other wildlife coming over to drink. Hippos are typical grazers living in social family pods headed by a dominant bull that defends and owns all the mating rights. The hippos’ notorious behavior of displays include snorting and intimidating yawns revealing its over twelve-inch canines.

  • Late Evening Game Drive

From the boat cruise, you will head to a guided evening drive targeting the nocturnal wildlife including; Nightjars, Lions and hyenas. Spending most of the day resting in dens and shades these iconic species prefer heading out to hunt, socialize and defend their territories in the cool of the night and mornings. Day Two: Morning Safari Drive and afternoon transfer to Kigali

After an early breakfast, we will meet up a ranger guide from reception and head out for wilderness drive. Our main targets will include Lions, Leopard and Hyena often encountered in the cool of the morning but Elephants, Buffalos, rhino, giraffes, eland, zebra, topi and many other herbivores will be on the list as we cover various habitats.

On these game drives, we not only focus on mammals and birds but also take time to soak in the scenic beauty of these expansive landscapes characterized by rolling hills, expansive marshes, plains, and the emptiness of wilderness.

From the game drive head out for lunch and transfer to Kigali or to your preferred drop point.
