Named after its oversized shoe-like bill, the Shoebill is a prehistoric species native to secluded mashes around Lake Victoria and River Nile flood areas. Rare and endangered, the Shoebill is known from a few locations in Africa where Uganda offers the most reliable and accessible opportunities to encounter this dinosaur-era species in its native habitats.
Dressed in a uniformed grey plumage, the Shoebill is a swamp dweller, standing at about 1.5m tall and on a buoyant flight, the wingspan stretches up to eight-feet (8ft) long. The Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) is classified in a sole family of Balaenicipitidae, a monotypic African family having no near affinities.
The Shoebill is a much-sought species and a bucket-list highlight on our Uganda Birding Tours and below are few hotspots where to encounter it.
