5 Days Rwanda Adventure Safari – Golden Monkey Trekking, Mt. Bisoke Hike and Lake Kivu

Day One: Transfer to Kiningi near Volcanoes NP

This morning after your breakfast, your guide will meet and pick you up from your hotel to transfer to Kinigi center set on the foothills of Volcanoes NP. The 2.5hrs scenic drive from Kigali City will be interrupted with a coffee/lunch break in the Musanze town. After check-in at your hotel, you will head out for an evening cultural expereince at Ibyi’wachu to learn of Rwanda’s culture.

Optional activities this late afternoon include scenic cycling expereince to view the volcanoes peaks and the stunning scenery.

Day Two: Hiking Mount Bisoke

This morning you will check in at Kinigi visitors centre where after registration ranger guides will give you a short briefing and thereafter lead you on a hike to Mt. Bisoke. You will thereafter transfer by car to the trailhead to begin the hike. Mount Bisoke towers up to 3711m on its highest peak close to a 400m crater lake. The trail passes through a beautiful afro-montane and bamboo forests on the lower slopes roamed by a variety of wildlife including the mountain gorillas and troops of golden monkey which you can actually encounter on a hike. The hike includes rest stops to refresh, refill and appreciate of the towering landscapes of the nearby volcano peaks and saddles before coming to the lovely crater lake near the summit.

Appropriate dress code on this trek day includes good hiking boots, long trousers and shirts. A parked lunch and plenty of drinking water is a must. At the start of the trailhead you will be offered a local walking stick -please take it, it will give you support on a hike and also you will have an opportunity to hire a porter to help carry your heavy backpack.

A hike to Mount bisoke normally lasts between 7-8 hrs depending on your stamina and how many many stops you make to appreciate the panoramic views.

Day Three: Golden Monkey trekking and transfer to Lake Kivu

This morning you will check in at Kinigi Visitors Centre of Volcanoes NP for golden monkey trekking expereince. After a hot coffee, your ranger guides will then transfer to the start of the trailhead to hike onto the feeding range of golden monkeys. Active, highly social and near endemic to Virunga Mountain ranges, golden Monkey occur mainly along the bamboo forest range in Volcanoes NP. The trek experience to the golden monkey is similar to mountain gorillas where you get to spend one-hour viewing, photographing and gaining insights into the social life of these beautiful primates.

The trek duration varies daily but anything between 4-5 hours is standard.

Upon return from the trek, you will transfer to Rubavu/Gisenyi City, set on the shores of Lake Kivu

Day Four: Kayaking Adventure on Lake Kivu

After a lazy breakfast this morning you will meet your kayak guides for an adventure along the scenic Lake Kivu. Kayaking on Lake Kivu offers stunning scenery of the terraced hillsides, fishing villages and secluded islands that teem with primates and birdlife. Kayaks range from single to double where paddling is tailored at your own pace allowing in rest stops in between to refresh, regroup and appreciate stunning scenery.

The kayak expereince include exciting adventure options to explore along the route among them; cycling, hiking, visits for coffee expereince and fishing expedition where you follow local fishermen on an evening duty. The expereince duration varies on optional adventures you tailor in the kayak trip but offers range from as short as 4hrs kayak to half or full-day.

Day Five: Optional Cycling/Hiking on the shoreline of Lake Kivu and Transfer to Kigali

This morning you will choose between a guided cycling tour along the scenic shores of Lake Kivu to appreciate the cool breeze and stunning landscapes.
